MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Members of the South Orange and Maplewood community gathered in Ricalton Square the evening of Aug. 13 to participate in a vigil for tolerance and peace in response to the violence in Charlottesville, Va., in the previous days. On Aug. 11 and 12, white supremacists and neo-Nazis gathered in Charlottesville for a Unite the Right rally to protest the removal of Confederate monuments and memorials from public spaces; this sparked many to come and counterprotest. In addition to several brawls, a protester has been arrested after driving his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one woman and injuring several others.
